SeaPUG Meeting, March 19, 2002

Brian Jaquet from Handspring was our guest this time. He came to talk about the new Treo products with a special focus on Treo Mail. Treo mail is a new e-mail client and service designed for fast and easy access to all e-mail, from individual users to corporate clients behind firewalls and everything. It's pretty cool. Brian also let us see a pre-production unit of the Treo 270. Yes, the one with the color screen. While I can't reveal any details that aren't already all over the 'net, I can say that it's VERY nice. Having the sneak peek at the new device was a great treat, but Brian didn't let it end there. He brought a bag of goodies (no Treo, but...) including a Handspring Visor Edge, GoType keyboard for Visor, 2 Treo t-shirts, and 10 "no slip" mats for car dashboards (with Handspring logo, of course ;-). I also had a slew of software from Handmark to give away including Mobile Tools, GolfTracPro, Monopoly, and Scrabble! Thanks to Handmark and Handspring for making a lot of people happy! :)

For me, the best part of the night was when we were giving away the Visor Edge. There was one person at the meeting who had not yet purchased a device, and was at the meeting to learn more about them. As we were about to pick a number for him (with our PickANum program) on the emulator running on our meeting room computer, the entire room full of people unanimously voted to simply give the Edge to the "newbie." I think that's a wonderful showing of generosity from the group. Instead of everyone vying for the prize themselves, they all elected to give it to the one person who didn't have one. How cool is that?
