External Sensors

by Bill Hindley

The Team ops gun had one sensor which could easily be covered up by hand and thus enable cheating. I wondered if , by removing sensor dome from one gun and fitting it to helmet and wiring it up in series with existing dome of the gun would enable both tagger gun and sensor in helmet to record hits? After much cussing and re-wiring I made it work, recording hits up to 115 yards in bright sunlight.. See picture of finished prototype. How to do it?

  1. Carefully remove all screws, remembering to unscrew moulding at base of handle, gently prise apart mouldings. Do this on two tagger units.
  2. Remove battery holder
  3. Remove one Sensor dome from casing and cut five attaching cable approx. 1 inch (25mm) from dome printed circuit board. This Sensor will be fitted to helmet.
  4. Remove sensor dome from second unit and cut five attached wires approx. 1.5 inches from printed circuit board. This unit will then be fitted in unit that first dome was removed from. It is essential to have excess length of leads.
  5. Undo all screws for HUD unit and remove cable with socket attached, cutting lead with socket attached as long as possible. Remove second lead in HUD and strip off outer sheath, cutting off Socket.
  6. Cut cables to socket in handle base that HUD plugs into approx 2 inched from Socket.
  7. Undo 3 screws that hold down cable clamp side of battery compartment.
  8. Strip and tin all cut cable ends for approx 0.25 inches (6.0mm)
  9. Prepare 15 cable sheaths (I used UK green and Yellow earth sleeving) to cover exposed solder joints.
  10. Solder cables using colour code as below

  11. Having connected all cables as diagram above, lay cables from HUD socket in section under battery casing (I used hot melt adhesive to keep in place) It is important to lay alongside existing cables so that cable clamp fits back into previous position without impinging on battery holder. I found it necessary to dress ribbon cable to the left to make room for new cables. Fiddly but it can be done with care.
  12. Connect the HUD cable to the Second Sensor Dome as diagram below. Remembering to sleeve joints. Tape together or seal using hot melt adhesive.

  13. Plug HUD lead into base of gun and to lead from helmet.
Job done.

Next plan is to swap spare, unused socket from base of host gun from which Sensor was removed from and fit into base of modified gun and connect to the Loud speaker wires and fit load speakers removed from HUD into helmet.
