I actually like to use "drafting dots" which are small round pieces of drafting tape. Drafting tape has the advantage of holding securly while allowing easy removal and re-application of the tape.
Tape is mainly used to hold down a pattern and tracing film while being traced, or a piece of tracing film while transferring the pattern to leather. It is also used to hold shut a roll of tracing film or paper.
